Pokémon GO Design System
Project Overview
UX 2023 Design Systems
Team of 13
February 2023 | 3 Weeks
In the last month of my Winter Quarter 2023 Design Systems course, my instructor announced that the entire class will be working to create a fictional design system for Pokémon GO. The 13 of us self-organized to efficiently and effectively meet the project requirements, with myself and one other classmate taking the role of co-project managers.
Project Goal
Our task was to create a design system with consistent design principles, style guide, pattern language, component library, user personas, journey maps, and to create mockups of two new features for the app. All of these were to be housed on a SharePoint site.
Personal Contributions
I did a little bit of everything as a project manager. I contributed to the project’s success by:
- Initiated team organization: After the initial introduction to the project, I immediately worked to list out what was required of us and started the conversation about who wanted to do what. I worked with my classmates to create a team charter and get started on their tasks.
- Assisted subteams in meeting their goals: Each meeting, I would ask each sub team if they were encountering any problems and offered myself to get work done. I primarily assisted in the creation of a SharePoint site and transferring the content the team wrote onto the site.
- Aided in cross-team communication: The other PM and I created an MS Teams channel to promote team collaboration and to send out vital communications outside of meeting time. I also made sure that each team got the items they needed from other teams so everyone could have a continuous workflow.
- Designed the report presentation: I started the documentation and creation of the report slides while the team was still finishing up their tasks. I ensured adherence to the design system’s style guide within the slide deck and visual elements within it. Attention was paid to make sure each slide was not busy and easy to understand.
Project Results
The team was diverse in their ages, experience working in an Agile team, and commitment to the project. The project was completed in time for the deadline with all requirements met. Several areas for improvement were identified, but given the short notice of this project’s start, the results were satisfactory.
