DIY Candle Kit Revamp

Project Overview

  UXD 3040 Agile Product Development

  Team of 5

  February - May 2024   |     10 Weeks

In my Spring 2024 Agile Product Development class, my team of five worked with the Milwaukee Candle Company to revamp their DIY Candle Kit product. We completed eight 1-week sprints and a final review presentation of all work completed for the term, each week presenting a sprint review to our client, professor, and an Agile coach.

Project Goal

The client wanted the revamped kit to allow for customers to blend their own scents to mirror the experience at the sister business, Glassnote Candle Bar. Additionally, have the kit be assembled in less time, have a material and labor cost under $15, and maintain or enhance the branding of the kit.

Personal Contributions

My role in the team was a developer, but I also completed a lot of tasks that the product owner or SCUM master might usually be tasked with. I contributed to my team’s success by:

  • Created and refined backlog items: I identified small chunks of work to complete to incrementally approach our goal, including user stories and detailed acceptance criteria in preparation for sprint planning meetings.
  • Completed backlog items: I completed my share of backlog items, including supplier research, workspace reorganization, conducting usability tests, and creating styled instructions.
  • Delivered Sprint Reviews: I organized the slide decks for each Sprint Review and Demo, including a summary of changes implemented from the previous Sprint’s retro, story point metrics, and plan for the next sprint.
  • Created final Sprint Review slide deck: I incorporated storytelling elements into the final review slide deck, making sure to include key information about each sprint, and ensured a cohesive design that matched the client’s branding.

Project Results

The client was immensely pleased with the results of the project. Notably he liked the organization of the workspace which resulted in three empty shelves that were used for product expansion, along with the idea and creation of “made by” stamps for each employee. The stakeholders appreciated that we noted dropped backlog items, and commented that the quality of work we delivered would normally cost a company thousands of dollars.
